

Luckily, there is a second part coming out this summer – I cannot wait to watch it! Along with the Gods will leave you craving for more of the afterlife stories. It is precisely this quality that makes the film entertaining. On one moment you cry, on the other moment you are laughing, but no one is complaining. The journey set by Kim Ja-hong is a rollercoaster of emotions for the fictional character and for the spectator too.


The cast has a little bit for everyone as it ranges from Korean drama idols to comedy actors and child celebrities.īesides the varied cast, Along with the Gods is an exquisite mix of different genres that are balanced in the narrative, making the film a perfect hybrid and an example of how versatile one single film can be while still making perfect sense and adding that twist that is often found in Korean productions. However, all eyes are at the main protagonists and star power Ha Jung-woo (known for The Chaser, 2008) and Cha Tae-hyun ( My Sassy Girl, 2001). The cast is terrific and all the characters have their well-deserved “5 min of fame”. The CGI world is a delight to watch as it is creative and fits perfectly with the whole story as it immerses the protagonist into the surroundings. The film has less fantasy action scenes than expected, but the CGI compensates this. During his adventure, the viewer discovers more about Kim Ja-hong’s life and his true nature. In order to do this, he is entitled to three guardians (more like his lawyers) who will defend him and guide him through his journey. However, first, he must pass seven trials of different levels of Hell in just 49 days, and convince the Gods that he is an honourable person. Because he saved other people’s lives during his life, he is allowed to reincarnate. The story starts with the death of fireman Kim Ja-hong (Cha Tae-hyun). In Along with the Gods, Kim applies his ‘winning-formula’ again, as this film has become the second highest-grossing film in South Korea. Kim delivers great entertainment in his works, mixing comedy with a touch of criticized reality. Go (2013) – with the latter being only successful in China. Kim is known for his box-office hits such as 200 Pounds Beauty (2006), Take Off (2009), and Mr. But, this fantasy melodrama action film was everything that I had expected.Īlong with the Gods is based on a webtoon by Joo Ho-mi and is directed by Kim Yong-hwa. At the same time, I was also afraid that my overexcitement would be crashed down like an insect that is squashed by a human shoe in just a matter of seconds. For my feeling, I had waited enough, and now I was very lucky that I could watch it on the big screen at the Imagine Film Festival in Amsterdam. I was hyping myself up since I watched the trailer of Along with the Gods months ago.
